Ol Doinyo Lengai is an active volcano in Northern Tanzania, which is located at the southern end of Lake Natron.
It is not exactly small (2,878 meters) and is one of many volcanoes along the East African Rift Valley System.

Ol Doinyo Lengai ("Mountain of God") contains basalt rich in sodium and potassium, and is so alkaline that the lava resembles detergent. Eruptions have been recorded from 1880 to 1967.
With a good condition, good feet and good shoes you can climb it on all fours at times.

DAY 1 ARUSHA TO OL DOINYO LENGAI MOUNTAIN

Your journey starts from Arusha and departs early in the morning to the wild and remote village of Ngaresero, where this mountain is located and surrounded by Lake Natron with some of the most rugged and amazing scenery in Africa…. this is absolutely breathtaking. The drive takes 6 hours and upon arrival you will enjoy a late lunch and some rest in the camp … waiting for the mountain climb that starts around midnight due to the (too) high temperatures during the day.

We will be in action at about 11 pm. With tea or coffee and a light snack before making your appointment with the Masai Mountain Guide with whom we will trek together towards the “Mountain of God”.

DAY 2 CLIMBING FROM ODOINYO LENGAI AND RETURNING TO ARUSHA

At midnight we depart to make it to the top in time to witness the sunrise as it illuminates the Great Rift Valley below. So it will be 4 hours of climbing with a rest break of an hour in the middle and then also relax for an hour at the top before the big moment of the sunrise.

Breathtaking views of the salt flats of Lake Natron to the north and the Kenyan border in the distance. With luck you will also see the snowy Mount Kilimanjaro and to the east and the vast Ngorongoro Highlands and finally the Ngorongoro Crater to the south.

Before descending you can enjoy a picnic breakfast and a refreshing lunch after descending the volcano. You can also freshen up in the camp. (GIRAFFE ECO LODGE)
