Climbing Mount Meru in 4 days and 3 nights.
Mount Meru, 70 km west of Kilimanjaro: perched at a dizzying height of 4,562 m, it offers unobstructed views as far as Kilimanjaro itself on a clear day.
The tour starts at Momella Gate in Arusha National Park and takes you to explore the amazing plant and animal life of the region. You will walk the first two days on a beautiful trail, along the Ngarenanyuki River, towards Miriakamba Hut (2500 m) and Saddle Hut (3500 m). We ascend gradually and cross Rhino Point (3800 m) and Cobra Point (4350 m) to reach the top (this happens at night). As for the level of difficulty, keep in mind that it is a trek suitable for seasoned hikers and novices alike.
DAY 1 MOMELA GATE -MIRIAKAMBA HOUSES: 13.8KM
Altitude: 1597m/5240ft to 2503m/8212ft
Elevation gained: 906m
After breakfast around 8.30 am drive to Momella gate, and start the real climb only after picnic lunch, to the first hut called Miriakamba hut. Dinner and overnight is also in this cabin.
DAY 2 MIRIAKAMBA HOUSES – SADDLE HOUSES: 6.1KM
Altitude: 2503 m/8212 ft to 3560 m/11,680 ft
Elevation gained: 1057m
After breakfast we continue with a climb to the second hut called Saddle. This part is too steep compared to the first part. During the afternoon you can still decide to climb the small Meru peak and back. Dinner and overnight is in the Zadelhut.
DAY 3 SADDLE HOUSE - SUMMIT: 5.5 KM + DESCEND TO SADDLE HOUSE
Altitude: 3560 m/11,680 ft to 4566 m/14980 ft
Elevation gained: 1006m
Descent to 3560 m/11680 ft
Lost altitude: 1006m
We wake up in the middle of the night and have a cup of tea before starting the great Meru peak. To the top over a rocky path and back to the Saddle hut for a full breakfast. This day will be spent resting. Lunch, dinner and overnight in Saddle hut.
DAY 4 SADDLE CAB – MOMELLA PORT: 6.5KM
Altitude: 3560 m/11,680 ft to 1597 m/5240 ft
Lost height: 1963m
We leave the Saddle Hut and descend to the Momella Gate via the first hut (Miriakamba) where you will be transferred to Arusha/Moshi, your safari, Zanzibar or home?
